Director's Message
Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam Director
The National Institute of Unani Medicine stands at the threshold of a transformative
era. Under the stewardship of Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam, the Director, who assumed office on
December 17, 2024, the institute envisions positioning itself as a global centre of
excellence—championing the integration of Unani medicine into India’s mainstream
healthcare system and elevating its relevance on the international stage.
Prof. Saiyad Shah Alam's journey in Unani medicine is marked by purpose and passion. An
alumnus of the distinguished Aligarh Muslim University, where he completed his BUMS and
MS in Jarahat, he was shaped by an academic environment rooted in excellence, innovation,
and integrity. This foundation laid the groundwork for a career committed to advancing
Unani education, research, and surgical practice.
From his early days in Deoband, Uttar Pradesh, to significant academic and clinical
contributions at H.S.Z.H. Government Unani Medical College, Bhopal, and later at NIUM
Bengaluru, where he joined in 2012 as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of
Ilmul Jarahat, each phase has reinforced his resolve to elevate the Unani system. His
pioneering efforts in laparoscopic surgery have demonstrated how traditional Unani wisdom
can be seamlessly integrated with modern surgical advancements.
Under his visionary leadership, NIUM has reached extraordinary milestones. As Deputy
Medical Superintendent (DMS) of NIUM Hospital, Bengaluru, he played a key role in
obtaining NABH accreditation for the hospital and NABL accreditation for its
laboratories—a testament to his commitment to quality and excellence and making history as
the first Unani hospital in India to receive such prestigious recognition. During his tenure at
NIUM Ghaziabad, Prof. Alam transformed the institute into a model of excellence. The
outpatient department (OPD) now caters to over 1,500 patients daily—an indicator of its
growing credibility and impact, made possible through strategic leadership and sustained
efforts. The introduction of postgraduate programs represents a significant achievement in the
academic and clinical evolution of NIUM Ghaziabad.
Prof. Alam’s contributions to research and academia are equally remarkable. He has authored
numerous National and International research papers and books, continuously enriching the
scientific foundation of Unani medicine. Recently, he was honoured with an invitation to the
TCAM International Conference and the 3 rd Edition of the Sheikh Zayed International
Awards for TCAM, from 10 – 12 th December 2024. These recognitions further highlight his
role as a global advocate for Unani medicine.
Now, as Director, Prof. Saiyad Alam mission is twofold:
1. To transform NIUM Bengaluru into a world-class hub for Unani medicine.
2. To further develop NIUM Ghaziabad into a model institution of excellence.
His comprehensive approach to revitalizing Unani medicine includes:
1. Promoting evidence-based research to validate and modernize Unani Medicine.
2. Expanding public awareness to enhance trust and acceptance of the Unani medicine.
3. Driving technological integration across diagnostics, treatment, and academic
platforms.
4. Fostering holistic development, including wellness initiatives through sports and
recreational activities for the institute’s community.
With the generous support of the Government of India, particularly the Ministry of Ayush,
the Director believes this is a pivotal moment to amplify the reach and impact of Unani
medicine. Through collaborative efforts and active engagement with all stakeholders, he
envisions a future where this ancient, time-tested system continues to evolve—offering
sustainable, affordable, and holistic healthcare solutions for generations to come.
